We survived week one of middle school -- yeah! T1 even started riding the bus for the first time in his life and all is going well with that as well. I was really nervous about this because I feared bullies would rule the bus and the experience would be horrible for T1, but I think everything is going to be fine. I was relieved because one of T1's friends is also riding the bus, but the friend migrated to the back of the bus after the second day; T1 decided he didn't want to do that so he's sitting by himself close to the front. Albeit small, I was proud of T1's decision to sit where he felt most comfortable and not follow his friend. I hope that's a sign of strength and confidence that will minimize his vulnerability to peer pressure as he gets older. I sure do read a lot into little things, don't I?
T1 is still enjoying his teachers, is enthusiastic about some of the subjects he's studying this year, and is thrilled to hang out with his friends during lunch. He wasn't happy with the school counselor who made him tuck in his t-shirt, though. Yep, a couple of T1's shirts hit just below his bottom and that's apparently against the dresscode so they made him tuck in his shirt. He also can't wear the new jeans we just bought. The jeans are good quality, but they have a couple of small rips that have cloth underneath them...so they're faux-rips. Well, I guess faux-rips aren't allowed either. Don't get me wrong, I've long made fun of buying jeans that are ripped, but these rips are small and they're backed by cloth material. I honestly don't understand the problem here. When I grew up kids had legitimate rips in their jeans because they were worn so much and the parents couldn't afford new ones. What do kids in this position do? Oh well, I think I'll let T1 wear his new jeans until someone says something to him about it. What other rules are silly? Hmmmm.... Oh yeah, kids aren't allowed to have mustaches. I thought this was funny because 6th graders can't possibly have mustaches, can they? Well, according to T1 several 6th graders have mustaches. Say what?! This floors me! No wonder T1 was so happy to get a black leg hair this summer. He's surrounded by 6th grade mustache men! I wonder what's in the milk they're drinking!
T2 and T3 start school next Tuesday. We had conferences with each of their teachers this week and we are so excited for school to start. Not only is it a great school, but Matt will finally get some well-deserved alone time. It's a win-win situation!
